Souji - Teddy Matheson

Player Name: Souji
Character Name: Teddy Matheson
Identified Gender/pronouns: male he/him
Species: Werebear
Age: 22

Basics (IC)
Full Name: James Theodore Matheson, but family and friends call me “Teddy” and yeah, I knows the joke there, wha? Was my grandpa’s name.
Family: Mudder (Mary), half-sisters (Carrie and Joann), Cousins (Michael and Jesse (twins)), and an older half-brother (David). Me sisters and brother are all on the mainland, carving out territories of their own, starting their own sleuth. Cousins are staying with Mudder and me for a time, getting a bit of learning in.
Friends: A few of the fellas I knew in superior I got on with, but we weren’t closer than occasional parties and school events. Mostly kept to the family. Plenty of work to do outside of school wha?
Where did you grow up?: Born and raised in Newfoundland, just along the coast by Deadman’s Bay.
What was your childhood like?: A standard upbringing, I would say. We runs a bed and breakfast, small, but cozy small, and raise sheep and goats. Sheep for wool, goats for milk and meat. Offering that real rural life some of the CFAs want, without being too rural wha? Since we’re all sleuth, it’s a close family. Mudder is in charge, keeping the order and taking in some that mights not have a place to go yet. Unlike some others, we’re part of the human community and so we alls went to school and learned to behave wha? Acts like proper people, so we fits in better. Gotta be safe and all, you learn that right young. Most other sleuths tend to live as far as possible from humans, but me great grandma came here back in the day from farther north and the land’s been ours now since. The settlement sort of grew up around it and instead of leaving, they all decided it’d be better to fit in. Fishing and hunting was good, still not many humans and no other shifters round on our side of the island. So we were close growing up, but still taught around humans. Dave left when I was right young, so mostly me sisters and me in the den wha?
What are your plans for the future?: I suppose I’ll wind up going home after getting me degree and just picking up the business. Me sisters have headed out to start their own families now and me mudder isn’t getting any younger… I want to write a book though. Maybe a few. For children mostly, maybe adults. She wants me to have that worldly experience though, and you need a degree these days proper wha?

Personality (IC)
What do you feel are your greatest strengths: I think it’s that I don’t much get crooked about things. Easy going. And I’ve been told I’m good to talk to. I likes to listen to folks.
What are your greatest flaws: Hahaha! Comes to who you ask. Me family would say I’m too wrapped up in me head. I think I’m probably a bit of a, eh, I’m a bit scattered yeah.
How do you treat others: Golden rule wha? You treats folks as you want to be treated. You don’t have to be friends with everyone, but everyone deserves a bit of kindness when you can.
What do you look for in friends: Sense of humor! And knowing hows to have a bit of kind fun, wha?
How do you handle confrontation: I don’t much care for a fight, but as me mudder says: “Teddy! Ya don’ go startin’ fights now b’y. But ya damn well stop ‘em.” If I can talk down a confrontation, I’s happy with that.
What is a day off like for you: Ah, a day off isn’t something you get much of when you works a farm. I guess I’d be out camping, or maybe going to see a movie with the guys from the village. Sleeping in if I can, that’s always a right fine start to the day b’y.
Addictions: No, not as I know, wha?
Are you a leader type, explain: Luh, if I take over the land, I’d have to be. Defend territory and all. But I’m not for being pushy wha? I don’t think I’d make a good leader really.
Are you curious or cautious, explain: Both? Can I say both? Luh, it’s healthy to have the mix of the two. Curious to learn, caution when you don’t want your nose in a trap.

School (IC)
Major: Literature/Business
Financial Assistance: Without assistance and some work study, couldn’t afford the schooling, wha?
Are you going home for the holidays: Nah, too expensive. Besides, that’s what the post is for.
Any objects of Power you need faculty to be aware of/store: Oh no b’y. I’m just me.
Any powers faculty need to handle: I suppose, if I get the blood up and go berserk, should probably be put down right quick, but can’t see getting that riled up wha? If I do, though, just in case, would be best to take me down quick and clean. If I don’t die, then I’ll sleep real deep for a week, maybe a week and a half, and be right as you please when I wake up.
Pets or familiars you need to house: No.

Powers (IC)
Abilities: Luh, I’m a werebear. So, for us, we have three states. In this state, human-shaped, I’m maybe a little faster, a little stronger. I have a little more stamina than a human of sames size and health, wha? Then there’s the full-bear. Like with the human-shape, this one looks like a polar bear, but a little too big, a little too fast, a little too strong, wha? And the third is in between. Big, fuck-off bear monster. Can walk upright or on all fours, has thumbs, wha? And is strong. Fast. Don’t always think past the fight and the blood… We can take down bull moose with nary a problem and me cousin Jesse, well, the twins are with us because they decided to squat a car on the mainland and got sent to me mudder for a bit of lessons. Just because you can squat a car, don’t mean you should squat a car.

When the blood’s up and the berserk takes over though… Well, takes a lot of damage in that middle form to really slow us down. We heal fast, but we’s not invincible wha? We can wear out like any other flesh n blood.

The full forms, they’re fine and easy enough to shift to, but it takes work and energy for the middle shift and you don’t always have the right mind for controlling it. Have to have a proper sleep and a big meal after that mess. Prefer to shift without clothes, but clothes don’t stop the shift, no matter what some says. Just uncomfortable to get all tangled up and it’s not on to ruin perfectly fine clothes, wha? Mudder would have me ears if I ruined a fine coat without good call.
Are these hereditary: Yeah. It’s not the kind of therianthropy that can be transmitted excepts from parent to cub. It’s a dominant gene though, so there’s a good chance that anybody born to a bear and a human will be a bear. Not always though. Gots a cousin that’s human.
Do you know how to use these abilities: Luh, I’m still working on that middle shift. It’s tough and me mudder makes it look easy, but with practice I’ll get better wha? For now, I usually save it for emergencies, so I’ve not done it in a while. Otherwise, been a bear my whole life wha? Know how to shift back and forth, no troubles. Full control there.
Are you a hero or have a Fated Destiny: Ah, I hope not. None of that kind of attention for me thanks.

Powers (OOC)
Abilities: Teddy is a werebear, with his family specifically taking on the form most similar to a polar bear. This breed of therianthrope is not contagious and as such, they cannot turn any other creature into something like themselves. A bite or a scratch from them results in a wound that mundane medical care can treat.

They are capable of shifting between human, animal, and an in-between “war” or “berserker” shape, though the latter requires a great deal of energy to change into and often will result in a shortened form of hibernation lasting about a week after use.

While in a human shape, they tend towards being roughly on par in strength to olympian-level strongmen and women and are a bit faster than the average human of a similar size, but speed is not really their strong suit. Rather, all forms trend towards the upper limits of strength and stamina. The secondary form, that of a full bear, can almost pass as a normal member of the non-shifting species to a layperson, but as they are considerably larger than ones on record, anybody more familiar with the species phenotype might be confused. As an example, Teddy, in bear form, looks much like a polar bear, with the white fur, and black nose and eyes, but he weighs in at just over 1,000 kg and stands 1.7 meters at the shoulder when on all fours and 3.7 meters tall on his hind legs. So, like a polar bear, but bigger. This form is also incredibly strong and considered by many to be as dangerous physically as the war form, and would be even more so were it not for the berserker rage that can often come with the war form.

The war form is capable of moving between a quadruped and biped form, and is capable of using tools, but there is the “berserker fog” that can take ahold of a shifter in this state that limits mental faculties, reducing the world down to battle and blood. This form is the most dangerous, particularly because it can be an uncontrolled change and thus be unpredictable, and sightings and legends of this form tend to be spoken of in old folk tales as a true monster.

Teddy’s kind are also fast healers and are immune to a number of illnesses and curses. While magic can have an effect on them, it tends to either be a limited or delayed effect or can require more energy to be used to get the same result.
Do you know how to use these abilities: Teddy can shift easily between human and bear and has complete control over both forms. The war form, however, takes a lot of effort and he isn’t as practiced in using and controlling it as he really should be. He is aware of that lack of control and works to not change into that shape.
Are you a hero or have a Fated Destiny: No, though he will, as an adult, wind up running a halfway house of sorts for wayward therianthropes and other shape-shifting beings after expanding his family territory, which might lead him to interact with hero sorts.
What are your hopes for your character: Teddy needs to learn to be more comfortable expressing his own personal desires and he needs to learn to accept the “big bear monster” that’s part of him. His mother sent him away to learn to be himself and to accept all aspects of who he is and learn to be worthy of inheriting her territory. He also needs to learn more about other paranormal sorts to better his ability to manage the territory and sleuth. And make new friends!
