SETTING
The World
Like so many other worlds, this world simply calls itself “Earth”.
This particular Earth has a history that almost precisely corresponds to our own.
Almost precisely in that powers do exist, and have influenced how actual historical events played out, but the results are the same. Ex. the Mongols still invaded China, however both sides had their own wizards/shape shifters/whatever.
Powers are absolutely forbidden to be shown to the world at wide, with all types of paranormal beings teaching their children to hide from infancy. People who break this law of the other side are hunted down without mercy.
Shutzhafen is at a nexus point between parallel worlds. Thus any and all versions of creatures are possible without there being “one true” type of, for example, werewolf. This portal is fully understood and regulated.
The portal is highly guarded. Der Erlkönig’s knights guard it 24/7, and any unauthorized use of the portal is met with deadly force.
Students are brought through the portal by an escort of one knight and a member of Admissions. While it is possible that a player character may be from a new world, it would be preferred that their family came from one and they, themselves, have been born and raised on this world.
If a person would like to have a completely new world they should write up a plot proposal for the connection of this new world so that we can make it a true event for others to react to. New worlds are a big deal!
The Campus
Set deep in the Black Forest, the campus is a large, sprawling thing made of magic, mystery, and an awful lot of ancient forest. Partially in what is considered by humans to be the “real world” and partially in a shallowing it is much bigger than it appears to be at first. Players may request additional buildings.
The buildings for each degree have several lecture halls of comfortable size, and two huge ones. Teachers have their offices in their degree building. Each office is customized beyond what one would expect from a typical baseline-human school to meet with any physical adaptations needed for that teacher. Ex. Dr. Lee’s office has virtually nothing burn- or melt-able.
Initial classroom buildings include physics, literature, gym, hard sciences, magics, maths, soft sciences, arts, and medical studies.
The Library is, without question, huge. It towers over the rest of the campus, filled with books on literally all subjects possible. It also contains things. Things gathered from all corners of the world. Some are magical. Some are historical. Some are weird. Some are just random bits of flotsam and jestam. All of them belong to The Nix, and to take them risks her wrath. The Library is The Nix’s domain and within it she is like unto a god.
The Cafeteria provides basic foods for all dietary requirements, from herbivores to carnivores to vampires to psychic feeders. It is open 6am-10pm daily, but hours will change if characters with special needs appear. The Cafeteria consists of a wide open eating area with tables of a variety of sizes and seating for various body builds scattered around. Furniture is made of wood and stone, very little metal. No cold iron.
The Cafeteria Kitchen is a potential Work Study Opportunity. It, like the campus, is larger than it seems to be at first with any equipment needed appearing around a corner and disappearing when neither needed nor observed.
The Hedge Maze is large and full. Now and then people do, in fact, get lost. Now and then things show up in there and wander into the rest of the campus. Some of them are dangerous, most of them are not.
The Lake has a boathouse on it. It does not appear to be an entirely natural lake, as there are no visible streams leading into or out of it. The water is bitterly cold most of the year and students are advised to bring some form of heating magics with them at any point other than high summer. Students are also advised to speak to the Nix before going out to the lake at night. Students are forbidden from exploring the underground, underwater cave system; it would upset the Nix.
The Forest surrounds the entire campus and is both dark and forbidding, and open and bright depending on the direction travelled and enrollment status. For a student going from the campus to the town or vis a vis it is open and friendly, for anyone from town towards campus it is forbidding and gives an uneasy feeling. This is one of the lines of defense in place to keep the campus safe. Students are requested not to guide non-students to the campus. Failure to follow this guideline will result in a meeting with the Dean.
The Gardens are extensive, consisting of both decorative and practical gardens. Students are advised to avoid them on the nights of the full moon, as the groundskeeping staff has a particularly infectious strain of lycanthropy. The grounds are infested with Wolpertingers and the hunting of these pests is encouraged on all non-full-moon nights. Full moon nights the groundskeeping staff is dedicated to the chase of these antlered, winged rabbit-squirrels.
The Stables house any personal riding beasts that the students bring, so long as the student in question pays for the upkeep of their animal, as well as a large number of non-sentient horses for use by the general population. Riding lessons are offered as a class skill, especially encouraged amongst those with a foretold destiny or hereditary heroic bloodline.
The Gate to der Erlkönig’s plane is guarded by the Alumni Association. Students must submit a written request in triplicate drafted with quill and ink in German a week in advance if they wish to visit His Majesty’s lands, as well as signing a binding legal document accepting all the dangers inherent in going Underhill. A guide to avoiding accidentally putting yourself in servitude to the German Elves is provided for those willing to risk such a visit.
The Dorms are a set of towers with one apartment per floor. Characters will be assigned a roommate based on self-identified gender. After a few months using this system we will be having an OOC survey to determine if this is working or if players would prefer to determine their own roommate. If a player and their assigned roommate cannot play together well they may request a room change - we’re happy to do that for you! If the characters cannot live together well, but the players are happy, the characters may request a room change from their RA. (Quad level blueprint here!)
Two, two-person bedrooms.
Any given room is single gender. There may be two women, two men, two other, but no mix of women, men, and other.
Any given floor is multi-gender.
Bathroom has two curtained tubs, two glass walled showers, an extended sink with multiple basins, and two walled water closets.
A kitchenette with fridge, electric or wood burning stoves at character request (wood burning stoves must be requested by all residents of a floor).
The stairs are fully enclosed, but climb the outside of the tower.
Accommodations exist for non-human bodies such as wings, no legs, etc. Just ask and the staff will provide.
To request additions to the campus and grounds you must have
2 or more players with good activity
A detailed example of what is desired. At least a paragraph the size of the above paragraph about the portal to the faelands.
A detailed explanation of why this addition will enrich the setting.
The Town
Unterwalde is a small, modern town five miles out from campus. It is the only town within a day’s ride (on horse) to the campus. Trips from campus to Unterwalde are at-will, and will not require any form of pass or notification of staff.
Main Street has a collection of eclectic little shops, including but not limited to handmade clothing, antiques, anf candles. Players may make any sort of non-magical, non-paranormal shops up that they desire without talking to the mods.
The Mall is quite small, containing a number of commonly found chain shops, and a small food court.
The Cinema is a small, four screen affair that tends to get films a month after the big cities do. The fourth screen shows a classic film every Tuesday, and an old silent film once a month.
There are several quaint restaurants and coffee shops, as well as a handful of fast food places.
Two Grocery Stores duel for supremacy in the town, one has a better produce section and the other has a wider variety of non-perishables.
The Post Office has PO Boxes available for students who might want to order things online to be delivered to the town. Delivery service is not available from the world at large to the campus.
